Lezersbrief 4: Geen jongen!?
Beste Hans,
Ik heb 3 zebravinken in een redelijk grootte kooi want ik heb meerdere Amadines bij elkaar, maar nu het probleem:
De zebravinken doen het heel leuk het zij 2 vrouwtjes en 1 mannetje.
Nu broeden ze er worden dus eitjes gelegd wat al meerder keren voorkwam. Maar ze verlaten het nest na 2en halve week om nooit meer terug tekeren. De huiskamertemperatuur is contstant, rust is aanwezig, beplanting in de kooi een lampje 3 voederbakjes met alles erop en aan. genoeg eiwitten zaden, gierst kortom alles wat tropische vogels nodig hebben is aanwezig. De kooi wordt 2 keer per week verschoont. Dus mijn vraag is wat doe ik fout of wat moet anders?

it has taken me some time to answer your e-mail because I have had some
difficulties in understanding it:
- "ik heb meerdere Amadines bij elkaar": I do not know how to interpret "bij elkaar": Does it mean you have both Zebra Finches and other Amadines, or do you refer to your Zebra Finches as Amadines (= estrildids with strong bills)?
- "is mijn dank groot mocht het mijn kant uitkomen": 'my gratitude is great
should it come from my side'? I am not sure what you mean by this.
But I think I can answer your letter notwithstanding these difficulties, and I
hope you understand my English:
I don't know how many eggs your ZFes laid, how many ZFes laid them (one or both of your females?) and when you started to count the 2,5 weeks you mentioned: From the first or the last egg? Anyway: If the birds left their nest after incubating their eggs regularly for 2,5 weeks for no obvious reason, they are likely to have realised that the eggs were not fertile because their instinct tells them the eggs should have hatched after 2 weeks.
In this case you should ask yourself and find out why the eggs of your ZFes
have never been fertile: for lack of "love", quarrel? old age? interference by the second female? interference by other bird species?
As for your description of your aviary and the equipment, it seems like a
Zebra Finch paradise to me – only life in Australia could be better.
